What the Chosen Few Picnic is

The picnic began in the 1970s as a gathering of friends in Jackson Park on the South Side, thrown by the DJs who would become the Chosen Few — a crew whose members were shaping Chicago house music while the rest of the world was still calling it disco. For years it was word of mouth: a cooler, a sound system, and a few hundred people dancing on grass.

It now draws tens of thousands to Jackson Park for a single all-day set rotation, and it remains structurally the same event. Same park, same DJs, same emphasis on grills, tents and generations of the same families showing up together.

Why it matters to Chicago

House music is a Chicago invention, and the picnic is the clearest living proof of that lineage. The founding DJs learned in Chicago basements and high school gyms, played the city's clubs when the music had no name yet, and are still behind the decks decades later.

The crowd is the other half of the story. This is a Black South Side institution with a multi-generational audience — grandparents who were at the early picnics, their kids, and their kids' kids, all in the same tent. Very few American music events can claim that continuity.

How to do it right

The picnic runs long — gates open in the morning and the music does not stop until evening — so plan like you are camping in a park for a day rather than attending a concert.

Veterans arrive early to claim shade, bring a canopy tent, a cooler, and folding chairs, and treat the grill as central rather than optional. Newcomers who show up at 3 p.m. with nothing will spend the day standing in the sun.

Getting to Jackson Park

Jackson Park sits on the lakefront in Woodlawn and Hyde Park. Driving is possible but parking within walking distance disappears early, and the surrounding residential streets fill by mid-morning.

Metra Electric to the 59th Street or 63rd Street stations is the fastest approach from downtown, and CTA bus routes along Stony Island and Hyde Park Boulevard drop within a short walk. Rideshare pricing surges hard at the end of the day; plan the exit before you plan the entrance.

If you have never been to a house set this long

The music is mixed continuously, so there is no obvious moment to arrive or leave. The experience is cumulative — the sets build across the day and the strongest hours are usually the last three.

Come with the expectation that you will dance, not watch. This is a participatory event with a crowd that has been doing it for forty years, and the fastest way to enjoy it is to stop looking for a stage and start moving.
