What flies

The program typically pairs military demonstration teams with civilian aerobatic performers and parachute jumps, running for several hours across both weekend days over the lakefront.

Schedules shift with weather and visibility. Low cloud over the lake changes the routines the pilots can fly, so the show you see on Saturday may not be the show you see on Sunday.

Where to actually watch

North Avenue Beach is the official center and the most crowded point on the lakefront that weekend. The show is visible for miles along the shore, and Oak Street, Fullerton, Montrose and North Shore beaches all give clear sight lines with a fraction of the density.

Practice day on Friday is the locals' choice: nearly the full program, a fraction of the crowd.

Bring sun cover, water and ear protection for small children. Low passes are loud enough to startle, and there is no shade on an open beach.

What the show is

The Chicago Air and Water Show is one of the largest free admission air shows in the United States and has run on the lakefront for decades. Military demonstration teams, civilian aerobatic pilots, parachute teams and water craft perform along a flight line centered on North Avenue Beach.

The show runs both weekend days, with practice flights the Friday before that many locals prefer — same aircraft, a fraction of the crowd.

Where to actually watch it

North Avenue Beach is the official center and the most crowded place in Chicago on show weekend. Getting a spot there means arriving in the early morning with chairs, shade and supplies.

The better local strategy is to watch from somewhere else along the flight line. Oak Street Beach, Fullerton, the lakefront path north through Lincoln Park, Montrose, and even the harbor walls give clean sightlines with dramatically less density. High floors and rooftops across the Near North Side work too — the aircraft are visible for miles.

Planning around the crowd

Two million spectators across the lakefront means cell service degrades, bathrooms have lines, and rideshare becomes unusable at the end of the show. Agree on a physical meeting point with your group before you separate.

Lake Shore Drive traffic and lakefront path congestion make bikes both the fastest way in and a hassle to park. Divvy stations near the show empty and fill unpredictably.

The parties around it

Air and Water Show weekend has become a full social calendar independent of the flying. Day parties, rooftop events, boat parties and beach gatherings run all weekend, and the Black social calendar in particular treats it as one of the anchor weekends of the summer.

A note on the lakefront

The show is a good excuse to use the lakefront properly. The path runs continuously for miles, the beaches north and south of the flight line stay usable, and the best photographs of the day usually come from a mile away from the crush.

Pack out what you bring in. Two million people on a shoreline is only sustainable because most of them clean up.
